Google employee “Orkut Büyükkökten“.. It claims to be designed to help users meet new friends and maintain existing relationships. Similar to Friendster and MySpace, Orkut goes a step further by permitting the creation of easy-to-setup simple forums (called “communities”) of users. Hi5, already a big network and rumored to be quite profitable,is surging. “Traffic is up 15% month over month, and Hi5 looks like it’s second only to MySpace at this point” said one executive at a large widget startup. He also said “They are clearly bigger than all the second tier social networks – Piczo, Bebo, Tagged, etc. ”The available third party data is mostly agreeing. Hi5 has a large presence in the U.S, but the bulk of its usage is in other countries. That may explain Why Comscore, which puts them at the 79th largest website based on 23 million worldwide unique visitors in December (just ahead of Facebook, which is no. 83 overall), shows a declining
U.S. uniques declined to 3 million in December, down from a high of just over 4 million in July 2006. I foresee a lengthy back-and-forth tug of war between Hi5 and MySpace in 2007. I don’t foresee, however, one or the other thrown down into flames. Unless one manages to enter the Chinese market without doing a Google, Yahoo, or MSN, throwing out any sense of freedom with the introduction of Hi5 or MySpace Mandarin.
The most popular social networking site on the Web, especially for teenagers and people under 30. Founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, MySpace was acquired by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation via its $500 million purchase of parent company Intermix in 2005. MySpace makes it easy for users to create a personal profile page, which can be enhanced with HTML code and turned into a multimedia Web page. MySpace users invite “friends” who can create their own MySpace pages and so on, providing a chain of friends that results in the largest group of linked people on the Internet. MySpace is also used by people to champion their talents. For example, musicians and videographers post their music and videos, and artists show their paintings. In 2006, MySpace users eclipsed 100 million.
Wired Magazine contributing editor Spencer Reiss said MySpace is the biggest mall nightclub and 7-Eleven parking lot ever created and the most disruptive force to hit pop culture since MTV. Those comments would seem to justify why Rupert Murdoch paid half a billion dollars for it. In July 2006, MySpace reached the top spot as the most visited site in the
MySpace attracts many under-age kids who want to be part of the “scene.” Police and educators hold seminars about MySpace (and similar venues), warning parents that child predators are at work at such sites, where very personal information is readily available. See social networking site.
